The World Cup continued on Wednesday, October 4, after a well-deserved rest day. The rest day was a good moment to take stock and take a small opinion poll. The question was: Who do you think has the best chance of becoming world champion?
Participants* could choose from 4 answers:
1. Yurii Anikeev (the current leader)
2. Jan Groenendijk (the man to beat)
3. Guntis Valneris (former world champion)
4. Someone else, namely…
One in three participants in the poll sees Yurii Anikeev as the biggest contender and one in three thinks that Jan Groenendijk has the best chance. And then there is a third group that thinks Someone Else has the best chance. Unfortunately, the last group mentioned few specific names, but it was probably the names that René Wijpkema mentioned: “Jitse Slump, Martijn van IJzendoorn or perhaps even Kees Thijssen, who makes a good impression. It is remarkable that no one believes in Guntis Valneris’ chances.
So, how did they fare in Round 8? Anikeev thundered through, another two against Yurii Bobkov. Jan did not get any further than a draw against Sip. The gap with Anikeev is five points (three loss points). That seems like a lot and is a lot, but Jan’s opposition has also been a bit more serious so far. Valneris and Artem Ivanov did not make an effort, quickly 1-1. Just like Jitse Slump – Ron Heusdens and Martin Dolfing – Kees Thijssen. It should not go unmentioned that Sven Winkel (one of the most attractive Dutch players in this tournament) received a salary for his work and defeated Hein Meijer.
It remains very exciting for the women. Lisa Scholtens defeated Fleur Kruysmulder and advanced to second place. If she had simply turned her match against Vitalia Doumesh into a win, she would now be 1st… But yeah, that doesn’t count. An old clubmate always said: “If my father was king, then I would be a prince.” Because the other contenders drew, everything is still very close together here.
