For the third time, top draughts players from all over the Netherlands are coming to Hoogeveen for the Basalt Dutch Drafts Championship for women . This tournament also took place here in 2022 and 2023. This edition will be the final piece of a beautiful trilogy. Once again this year, the organization is in the trusted hands of ‘ DroomDamsters ‘, a draughts association that actively promotes girls’ and women’s draughts in the Netherlands. DroomDamsters is one of the largest draughts clubs with more than 200 members. This year the field of participants is again strongly filled with young talent, the established order and also the international top. The match will be played from 22 to 28 June in the MFC De Magneet. The NK falls under the auspices of the Royal Dutch Drafts Federation (KNDB) and is in collaboration with the Drenthe draughts Federation (DDB).
The first National Championships in Hoogeveen took place in Het Klooster in 2022. The young organizers, Vera Brunink (20), Nicole de Vries (20) and Jasmijn Scholtens (21), organized their first major draughts tournament. All three organizers will once again do their utmost to make it a wonderful tournament this year. Vera Brunink looks back with great pleasure on the beginning of this NK triptych. “It was the first time that I led the tournament as tournament director. We received a lot of publicity from local and national media, which gave girls’ and women’s draughts a huge boost. I was also heard live on Radio 538, and my fellow organizer Jasmijn Scholtens was seen on the NOS news. Last year too, a lot of attention was paid to the National Championship finalists. We are pulling out all the stops to make this last edition a very nice tournament.” Last year, the A group was won by grandmaster Darya Tkachenko, who took her first Dutch title. The B group was won by Danielle de Vos, who can therefore participate this year with the 10 draughts players in the A group.
Girls’ and women’s checkers have become more popular
Thanks to the efforts of DroomDamsters, girls’ and women’s draughts have become more popular. Not only does DroomDamsters organize the National Championships, they also work hard for the new generation. Girls’ tournaments are organized several times a year throughout the country. There is always great enthusiasm for these tournaments. Chairwoman Nicole de Vries sees a positive trend in girls’ and women’s draughts. “When I was still a youth player, there were no girls’ tournaments. I am therefore very happy that we can make this possible for you with DroomDamsters. There is a great need for these types of fun tournaments. I really enjoy seeing that so many girls share the passion for the beautiful game of checkers. I hope they continue to play checkers and who knows, maybe one day they will also shine on the National Championship podium.”

The field of participants has many familiar faces. Most players have also participated in one of the previous editions. For example, GMIF Darya Tkachenko (40) from Wageningen will try to defend her title. She finished second in the world last year and will play a match for the world title in December. The 2022 champion, MFF Laura Timmerman (31) is also present again. She did not participate last year. After not playing checkers for 12 years, MFF Karlijn Overes (29) is making her return to the women’s national championships this year. She last participated in the women’s national championships in 2010, when she came second. Also participating are Jacqueline Schouten (60) from IJmuiden and Rianka van Ombergen-Rentmeester (37) from Heinkenszand. The draughts player with the most experience at the Women’s National Championships is MIF Vitalia Doumesh (59), who will participate for the 27th time this year. Last year she took bronze. Thanks to her convincing victory at the Proost Management NK-B in 2023, MFF Daniëlla de Vos (50) from Bergen op Zoom will also play in the A group this year. Furthermore, the field of participants is completed by three young talents from the KNDB girls’ talent program. MFF Fleur Kruysmulder (17) from Huissen is participating in the women’s National Championships for the second time this year. On behalf of drafts club Hoogeveen, MIF Lisa Scholtens (19) and MFF Yulia Bintsarovska (15) will participate again this year. Scholtens finished third in 2022 and second in 2023 at the Women’s National Championships. Only the national title is still missing. For Bintsarovska (in action in the photo below) it is her second National Championship, last year she came close to third place because she finished with 3 others in shared 4th place with 10 points. At 15 years old, Bintsarovska is the youngest participant this year.
NK B category
The NK B category will take place for the third time: the Cheers Management NK Women. This tournament will be held from June 24 to 28. The winner will be promoted to the A category next year. This year, 7 players are participating: Anna Bakker from Hoogeveen, Marjory Feyt from Tiel, Barbara Graas from Wormerveer, Fienne Martens from Witharen, Marlijn Moene from Wageningen, Iepie Poepjes-Koopman from Lemmer and Nicole Schouten from IJmuiden.

All games are played on live boards. Home viewers can closely follow all the moves played. An analysis graph also runs during the live games to display the (missed) opportunities. This year, NK broadcasts, ‘news’, will be made every day. This is provided by the Hoogeveen draughts player MF Nick Waterink. Waterink will discuss the highlights of the day in an accessible explanation. The broadcasts can be viewed on the NK website.
Side events
With the collaboration of the Fitter Brein dam project, social activities are also set up during the National Championships. They give something back to society through activities. In addition, Fitter Brein will organize a checkers meeting for the older residents and everyone will be challenged to play a game of checkers. An episode of ‘ Dampraat.’ will also be broadcast on Friday, June 28‘ included. A podcast by Friso Fennema and Rienk van Marle. Ester van Muijen and Karin van Lith speak.
Councilor Bisschop opens the tournament.
The opening will take place on Saturday, June 22 at 12:30 PM. The opening will be done by sports councilor Roelof Bisschop of the Municipality of Hoogeveen.
